When people need a doctor, dentist, physiotherapist or diagnostic test, most start with a search on their phone: “dentist near me”, “sports physio in Leeds”, “paediatric clinic Brisbane” or “urgent care open now”. They look at the map results, read reviews and check the website before they call or book. If your practice is hard to find, has few reviews or a website that does not answer basic questions, patients simply choose the next result.
Healthcare marketing has to be done responsibly. It should inform, not exaggerate, and it must respect the advertising rules that apply to medical and dental professionals in your country, the healthcare policies of Google and Meta, and privacy law such as HIPAA in the United States or GDPR in Europe. Always check the specific rules with your professional body or adviser. Within those limits, there is a lot you can do to help patients find and trust you.
The foundations
1. Google Business Profile
For most clinics, the map listing brings more calls than the website itself. Get it right first:
- Correct practice name, primary category (“Dental clinic”, “Physiotherapist”, “Medical diagnostic imaging centre”), opening hours and phone number
- Real photos of the building, reception, treatment rooms, equipment and team
- Services listed clearly, with short descriptions
- Regular updates about new services, new clinicians, holiday hours or accessibility information
- Separate, verified listings for each location if you have more than one
2. Reviews, handled ethically
Reviews are often the deciding factor for new patients. Politely invite satisfied patients to share their experience, for example with a follow-up email or a card at reception. Never offer incentives for reviews, and reply to every review professionally. Crucially, never confirm that someone is a patient or mention any treatment details in your replies, even when responding to a complaint. A short, polite response inviting them to contact the practice directly protects both the patient and you.
3. A website patients find useful
- Clinician profiles with qualifications, registrations and areas of interest
- Services and treatments explained in plain language, without promises of results
- Clear opening hours, location, parking, public transport and accessibility information
- Insurance, payment and fee information in the format that applies in your market
- Online appointment requests, click-to-call and messaging options
- Secure forms and a clear privacy notice; keep sensitive medical details out of simple contact forms
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages
If you want patients to book, reschedule and receive reminders from their phones, a patient app for your clinic can take pressure off your front desk.
Growing beyond the basics
- Local SEO: dedicated pages for each service and for the towns or neighbourhoods you serve, such as “dental implants in Bristol” or “physiotherapy in North Auckland”.
- Helpful content: clear answers to the questions patients actually ask (“When should my child first see a dentist?”, “What happens at a first physio appointment?”), written or reviewed by your clinicians.
- Google Ads: targeted campaigns for specific services within a small radius, following Google’s healthcare and medicines policies and any certification it requires in your country.
- Social media: health awareness posts, team introductions, behind-the-scenes content and practice news, never patient photos or stories without explicit written consent.
- Email newsletters: seasonal reminders such as flu vaccinations or check-ups, sent only to patients who have opted in.
Privacy and tracking: a special note
Healthcare websites need extra care with analytics and advertising pixels. Tracking tools placed on appointment or condition pages can pass sensitive information to third parties, which regulators in the US and Europe have scrutinised. Keep tracking to a minimum on sensitive pages, use a proper cookie consent banner, and review your setup with your privacy adviser. A good agency will build this in from the start rather than bolt it on later.
What to measure
- Calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Google listing
- Online appointment requests and where they came from
- Number and average rating of new reviews
- Rankings for your key services and locations
- Cost per appointment request from paid campaigns
For small practices, the same local principles we describe in our guide to digital marketing for local businesses apply too.
